about hhsn

I'm a geek, and this is something I tinker with on my spare time.

One day, I decided "Hey, I'm going to try running my own server!" So I threw up a Windows 2000 Server box...the only server OS I was comfortable/semi-fluent with at the time. I played with it for a bit and decided that I needed a domain. So, I bought hhsn.net (for Hoppe Home Server Network), because anything else I thought of that was semi-cool was already taken. Not that this domain is in any way cool, but it's short.

I played with Win2K Server on an old Dell PII 450 box with 512 MB RAM and a 13 GB hard drive. It was a lot of fun (because I'm a geek). However, learning about the security flaws in IIS (and Windows in general) and wanting to try something else made me decide to move my server over to Linux.

I bought a new server and installed Debian. I was fairly comfortable working with Linux in a desktop environment, but really didn't know what I was doing as far as server environments go. Luckily, I'm a fast learner. :-). She's been up and kickin' ever since (minus a couple major hardware changes).

Since late 2005, this web site is running on a Dell PowerEdge 830. It's got a 3.0GHz Pentium D processor, 2 GB RAM, 3x250GB SATA drives in a RAD-5 configuration. Nothing compared to what you can get today, but in 2005 it wasn't too shabby (especially for a server under $1,500).
